OLYMPIA, WA-After learning a potential deal with unnamed developers had collapsed, city officials have called off an Aug. 29 public forum. The purpose of the meeting was to take community input on the proposed development of a conference center and a hotel.Although Port of Olympia representatives say they have received inquiries from other potential builders, the fate of the project appears uncertain because of legislative and funding deadlines that might not be met. Plans had called for 125-room hotel to be built on 3.7 acres of port property north of State Avenue.Still on the schedule is a Sept. 11 council date, which has been reserved for discussion of a draft charter and interagency agreement to create a special taxing district for the conference center. Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater will take part.

City staffers say the goal of that agreement would be to establish a utilities district. Provided all parties agree, a portion of sales tax revenue from the three cities could then be used to help finance a feasibility study of and ultimately the construction and maintenance of the conference center.
