Tellabs Delays Office Plans as Company Cuts Staff by 12%

CHELMSFORD, MA-Tellabs halts its plans to open offices here and to hire additional employees in this state. The telephone network equipment maker is another in a long list of companies in its industry--including Lucent and Nortel--to cope with reduced demand for their products.

CHELMSFORD, MA-Tellabs Inc. plans to cut 1,000 jobs or 12% of its work force and has put the brakes on its plans to open offices here. The company, one of the biggest manufacturers of equipment for telephone networks, is attempting to cut back on expenses as it faces reduced demand for its products.

Lisle, Illinois-based Tellabs had planned to consolidate its operations that are now located in Bedford and Burlington under one roof here. The company had also planned to more than double the number of its employees in this state to 300 over the next five years. There are currently 140 employees of Tellabs in this state and reportedly eight will lose their jobs in this latest wave of layoffs. There are no plans to hire additional employees at this time.
