The 12,000-sf plant was used by Melbourne, FL-based wireless communications firm AirNet as a manufacturing center for electronic components. Workers were pink-slipped last Friday, according to Westbury-based company director Bob Herrmann.

While AirNet continues to occupy the space, Herrmann said the deadline for all equipment and personnel to vacate the premises is Friday, September 7. The plant reportedly employed roughly 15 staff.

The building, 609 Cantiague Rock Rd., is owned by John Hassall Inc., also of Westbury. The terms of the lease were not disclosed. Hassall representatives did not return phone calls.

Orders to shutter the plant came one week after AirNet announced a follow-on order from Somalia-based Telsom Mobile for additional base station equipment. A company statement said the transaction was the second in a two-phase, "multimillion dollar contract announced in May 2000."

Officials from AirNet's Florida headquarters did not return phone calls regarding the closure.
