Voters approved a bond issue to double its size. With the announcement, the center is "on track and moving forward," says Mayor Wellington E. Webb.

Webb also notes the development of an 1,100-room Hyatt Regency convention headquarters hotel across the street on 14th Street was making, "definite progress."

"The time is now for the construction of this long awaited expansion of the Colorado Convention Center," says Joyce Foster, president of the Denver city council. "I believe I speak for a majority of the council when I say that we look forward to working with the Mayor and Hensel Phelps to get this vitally important project underway just as quickly as possible."

Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth praised all four finalists -- Hensel Phelps, Turner Construction, PCL Construction and Mortenson -- as "outstanding firms" that made the eventual choice of one firm, "very difficult." She went on to say that she looked forward to working with Hensel-Phelps to complete the project, considered crucial to the economy of her district and all of Denver.

"I am very proud that our firm was chosen to complete the job we began over a decade ago when we built the first Colorado Convention Center," says Jerry Morgensen, president and CEO of Hensel Phelps, based in Greeley, CO.
