City Picks Convention Center Builder

DENVER-Hensel Phelps built the original 300,000-sf Colorado Convention Center more than 10 years ago and is coming back to build the $268-million expansion. The firm beats out Turner Construction, PCL Construction and Mortenson.

DENVER-Hensel Phelps, the largest general contractor based in Colorado, landed the job to build the $268-million expansion of the Colorado Convention Center. Hensel Phelps built the original 300,000-sf center that opened in June 1990.

Voters approved a bond issue to double its size. With the announcement, the center is “on track and moving forward,” says Mayor Wellington E. Webb.

Webb also notes the development of an 1,100-room Hyatt Regency convention headquarters hotel across the street on 14th Street was making, “definite progress.”
