The public is invited to attend a groundbreaking ceremony at the intersection of Delridge Way Southwest and Southwest Webster Street at 5:30 p.m. today.

The precinct, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2002, will house 84 police officers and administrative staff, although the employee roster is expected to reach more than 100. The station also will include a 900-sf community meeting room.

The total project budget, including design, construction, permits and administrative costs, is currently $11 million, excluding costs for land acquisition. The city acquired rights to the land about a year ago and is currently completing negotiations with the property owners to finalize a price.

This facility is different from other city facilities because it is considered an "essential facility." That is, the facility will need to be fully operational immediately after a major earthquake or other major disaster. Essential facilities have much stricter standards than other buildings for earthquake-resistive design and have stand-alone power for the entire building for a 72-hour period.
