ORLANDO-The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the deaths of two workers killed by a falling 78-ton, 132-foot long concrete beam as they were guiding the material from a bridge where a state-built bicycle-trail overpass was being constructed.

The Sept. 10 accident was on Neptune Road, Osceola County, 25 miles south of Downtown Orlando.

The beam was being pushed into place on the overpass by a 170-foot tall crane and a 140-foot tall crane. Area construction industry officials tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity that each of the cranes should have had a holding capacity of about 50 tons, enough to hold the concrete beam. OSHA officials couldn’t be reached at GlobeSt.com’s publication deadline.
