Rescue workers were ordered from the scene shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday, as now-familiar rolling clouds of smoke confirmed the demise of yet another downtown building. City officials last night confirmed the collapse of Five World Trade Center, a nine-story office building. A second cave-in at the Center's south tower occurred at roughly 5:30 p.m., leveling what was left of that structure.
City Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen confirmed last night at a press conference that engineers are inspecting 1 Liberty Plaza, a 54-story office tower at Broadway and Liberty Street, after reports of a crack in the building. Building owner Brookfield Properties has issued a statement denying structural damage to the building.
The nearby Hilton Millennium Hilton Hotel, located at 55 Church St. is said to be in imminent danger of collapse, though the extent of the damage to that structure is unknown. Marriott officials yesterday confirmed severe structural damage to its hotel at Three World Trade Center, another building said to be in danger of falling.
City officials have declared an eight-block area of downtown Manhattan unstable as city engineers conduct building-by-building inspections to assess ancillary damage from the initial attacks that felled the two World Trade Center towers.
