This phase of construction, which is expected to conclude at the end of next year, will include masonry and electrical work. Site improvements already complete include storm drainage and sidewalks on Taylor Street.
The jail currently has the capacity for 200 inmates but consistently houses more than that. The hope is the new 525-bed facility will meet the county's needs for the next 20 years.
Kitsap County officials say several contracts will be awarded in the coming months, as more work is needed. Taxpayers are footing the bill for the $25 million project after voters approved a .10 percent increase in the county sales tax.
