The action Sept. 11 came two days after the Port District, which now runs the airport, voted to oppose the legislation. Supporters say the bill has bipartisan support. The bill now goes to the Assembly, where itmay be heard by at least one committee before going to the full House.
AB 93, sponsored by Assemblyman Howard Wayne, D-San Diego, would create the authority, which would be governed by a nine-member board selected from throughout the county. Three of those directors would form an executive committee, serving as full-time employees.
The authority would operate Lindbergh Field, plan all future airport developments and have the power to operate smaller county airports.
The bill consolidates planning and operations at Lindbergh. Currently, Lindbergh is run by the port. The San Diego Association of Governments handles planning for the airports.
