Hormel says the museum is "dedicated to the quirky joys and unprecedented excitement inspired by Spam." Spam is "a slice of Americana that deserves recognition," says Julie Craven, director of public relations for Hormel Foods.

The museum will also pay homage to Hormel Foods, the company that produces the 64-year-old American icon. The product museum will feature a series of exhibits, interactive games and video presentations.

The new museum may be a bit of a blow to Austin's OakPark Mall, which had a Hormel Foods/Spam history center and drew about 60,000 visitors a year. The new center is about 20 times larger than that center.
