Silverstein Expresses 'Sorrow and Pain' in Aftermath of WTC Tragedy

NEW YORK CITY-In a prepared statement, the new holder of the 99-year master lease on the World Trade Center makes his sentiments known. "Anyone who believes in freedom and democracy became a New Yorker," he says.

NEW YORK CITY-It wasn’t that long ago that Larry Silverstein made news holding the outsized ring of keys to the World Trade Center. With the devastated property so prominently in the news again, Silverstein is not granting interviews. But in a prepared statement, he expressed his “sorrow and pain” over Tuesday’s events. Following is the complete text of his statement:”It is with deepest sorrow and profound pain that we mourn the loss of so many lives in this horrific tragedy.

“A great number of our friends, loved ones, tenants and co-workers are lost or missing. Our prayers are with them, their families and those who were injured. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of those who perished in this vicious assault.

“We will never be able to pay adequate tribute to those incredibly brave firefighters and police officers who lost their lives while trying to save others. Their courage and valor will become a permanent part of American history.
