Roel, 55, a 30-year veteran of the company, remains a shareholder and member of the board of directors. He also will remain involved with the company by advising Roel's senior management and assisting in client relations.

Since 1999, day-to-day operations of Roel Construction have been the responsibility of Kevin Elliott, Stephen Roel's nephew and the great-grandson of the company's founder.

Since Roel became president in 1988, the company has grown its revenues from $30 million to more than $200 million. It went from being a specialty contractor to a statewide firm that also offers tenant improvements, construction management, consulting and surety support services.

Elliott says the company's directors have no immediate plans to fill the position of CEO vacated by Roel's retirement. "Steve set us on a prosperous course. We have no plans to alter that course because, quite simply, it works," says Elliot.

In addition to its headquarters in San Diego, Roel Construction has offices in Palm Springs, Las Vegas and Phoenix. The company presently employs some 300 people and is involved in projects with a cumulative value of over $440 million.
