The property will be the site of the college's new Project Synergy Educational Collaborative. The California Postsecondary Education Commission hopes it will become a model center for the future.

The purchase is part of the expansion of the college funded by the voters with the passage of a ballot initiative, Proposition AA, last November. The college's governing board approved the acquisition in January.

The new project is near the site of Otay Mesa High School in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Southwestern College is currently seeking designation of the site as an official community college center by the state.
