Company officials report that Xerox will occupy its high-tech call center space sometime next summer. Scott Armour McCrea, president of the Armour Group, explains that Xerox TeleWeb has signed a lease for approximately 40,000 sf of a 77,000-sf building that will be known as the Xerox Knowledge Centre. That property, 237 Brownlon Ave., is part of a two-building complex to be built that will total approximately 117,000 sf that will cost approximately $11.5 million (US) to build.

Xerox has options to take as much as 80,000 sf at the two building complex, which is part of the Park Place Corporate Campus, McCrea adds. The Armour Group Ltd. is a commercial development firm that owns commercial office, residential and hospitality space in the Canadian Maritimes. Its portfolio totals approximately one million sf of space.

While Xerox TeleWeb operations will begin in January 2002, the company does not expect to take occupancy of its TeleWeb Centre leased space until June 2002.

The facility will be the third TeleWeb facility in North America. Offices already operational are housed in Saint John, New Brunswick and Irving, TX. The facilities combine the use of the Internet with advanced telecommunications technology that has helped produce 21% growth in year-to-year Xerox product sales and services, company officials relate.

"The new Halifax TeleWeb Centre will further improve the productivity of our sales force and extend Xerox's reach to current and new customers across North America," says Cameron Hyde, president, Xerox Canada Ltd.

The operation initially will bring 150 full-time jobs to the Halifax area, with likely expansion to 600 positions over time, Hyde notes.

Xerox officials say that the TeleWeb Centres differ from the traditional telemarketing call centers, noting that the employees of Xerox TeleWeb Centres in Saint John and Irving are well educated--more than 70% hold college degrees. Xerox has already started recruiting staff for its Halifax facility.

"From Halifax, as in Saint John and Irving, our TeleWeb specialists will be serving customers in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico," notes Mary P. Donato, vice president, Xerox Global TeleWeb Operations. "They will encounter all types of sales situations and several different languages, so we intend to recruit top candidates who will flourish in this environment."
