TROY, MI-City staff members have asked the city council to consider changing ordinances, or creating a new one, to allow more multifamily housing in the city. The affluent Detroit suburb, known for its high-end market of office uses, retail developments and residential homes, has been lacking in condominium and apartment units.

The purpose for allowing greater density would be to provide an alternative to constructing more office buildings and to diversify the housing stock in Troy, says City Manager John Szerlag.

Szerlag has presented a proposal to the council by Tadian Homes for such a multifamily project. The development would be called Back Bay Village, and built on 5.8 acres, replacing Big Beaver Elementary School off the northeast corner of Rochester and Big Beaver roads.
