The glazed doughnuts have developed quite following -- if previous openings are any indication, the openings are expected to draw throngs of customers.
To serve the Twin Cities, other midwestern markets, as well as the western half of North America, Winston-Salem, NC-based Krispy Kreme Doughnutssays it has an option to purchase about 34 acres in Effingham, IL with plans to build a new 187,000-sf manufacturing and distribution facility.
About 47,000 sf of the facility will be dedicated to the blending and packaging of prepared doughnut mixes and about 116,000 sf will be used for a new distribution center.
Krispy Kreme officials say Effingham was selected due to its proximity to major highway and rail intersections.
"We are very excited about this new plant. Not only will we be positioned closer to most of our franchise customers, but this new facility will allow us to maintain or improve our unit cost as soon as we begin operations," says John Tate, chief financial officer and president of Krispy Kreme's manufacturing and distribution.
The company has opened 17 franchises since March, and there are now 194 stores in 31 states.
