SAUSALITO, CA-Three proposals have been presented for a conference center at Fort Baker, all of which aim to appease concerned citizens who fear traffic and environmental damage. In May, a lawsuit was filed against the National Park Service over the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s Fort Baker plan in US District Court.

The $60-million project, brought about by a congressional mandate to make the site financially self-sufficient, would revamp the eastern part of the protected land into a retreat with 350 hotel rooms, 25,000-sf of commercial property and a 2,700-space parking facility. Since May, three proposals have been designed that include fewer rooms and less development.

The Fort Baker Retreat Group LLC proposes to establish 156 rooms, some of which will be built in the historic buildings and others that will be conservatively constructed to fit into the surrounding environment. In addition, 20,000 sf will be built to accommodate meetings, a restaurant, wellness center and gift shop.
