The Walker Art Center, which owns the building and is seeking the demolition permit, has yet to decide what it wants to do with the theater complex once its main tenant moves to new quarters planned for the banks of the Mississippi River in Downtown. The Walker plans a $90-million expansion and may want to use the space where the Guthrie stands for underground parking topped by an extension of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
Some believe the building, which put Minneapolis on the theater map when Sir Tyrone Guthrie opened it nearly four decades ago, has too much historical importance to be razed.
The planning commission will consider the issue and the preservation commission's recommendation on Oct. 16.
