Preservation Group Opposes Guthrie Demolition

MINNEAPOLIS-The Walker Art Center may want to raze the theater complex as part of a $90-million expansion. The issue now goes to the city council, which will consider the group's and planning commission's recommendations.

MINNEAPOLIS-The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission recently voted to withhold its support for demolition of the Guthrie Theater building. The matter will soon go to the Minneapolis City Council.

The Walker Art Center, which owns the building and is seeking the demolition permit, has yet to decide what it wants to do with the theater complex once its main tenant moves to new quarters planned for the banks of the Mississippi River in Downtown. The Walker plans a $90-million expansion and may want to use the space where the Guthrie stands for underground parking topped by an extension of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
