The law firm, which occupies 90,000-sf of space on 5 floors at 1999 Harrison St., recently extended its lease for the next 11 years for $50 million over the life of the lease. Transpacific Development Co., which developed and manages the property, was pleased that the company decided to renew and renovate the space.
Huntsman AG is maximizing the law firm's use of space while updating the look of the 1980s-era suite of the offices.
"Since our firm was founded in San Francisco more than 20 years ago, we have maintained a fast-growth pace that has allowed us to expand our services beyond the Bay Area to business centers throughout California and across the country," says Daniel Huntsman, president and founder of Huntsman AG. "The Crosby Heafey remodel draws on our in-depth space planning and design experience in working with law firms and, when complete, will be another signature East Bay project for our firm."
Construction on the Oakland law firm's building began on the 22nd floor in June of this year. Huntsman AG has eliminated a parallel corridor system on the floor, consolidated filing systems into centralized rolling box-file storage units, and expanded the open work areas adjacent to perimeter offices to reinforce the sense of openness within the space.
These changes allow premium office space that was being used for war rooms, file storage and redundant circulation, to be returned to functional workspace. "The firm made the decision early on to focus their design budget on common areas rather than individual offices," says Susan Williams, vice president of Huntsman AG. "Our task has been to create a new interior environment in what is currently a very monochromatic, static space."
An upcoming phase of the project involves transforming the library to function as both a library and multi-use facility ideal for meetings. The final phase of construction is scheduled for a completion date of June 2002.
