Intel's Fab 22 is designed with 133,000 sf of cleanroom space, a four-story, 320,000-sf manufacturing support building and a 123,000-sf central utility building. Development costs for the fabrication plant, which is on the Intel campus in Chandler at 4500 S. Dobson Rd., stand at more than $2 billion.

The fabrication plant is adjacent to Intel's campus, which has been operational since the early 1990s. The first plant spurred additional high-tech development and attracted other high-tech manufacturers, helping to turn Chandler into the Valley's "Silicon Desert."

The Fab 22 will manufacture Intel's Pentium line of microprocessors and will employ 1,800 workers, of which 1,000 are new positions. The new jobs include engineers, technicians and support staff.

The opening coincided with Intel's release of third quarter financial figures. The chipmaker giant met analysts' expectations for third-quarter earnings, posting quarterly revenues of $6.5 billion and net income of $106 million. Net income was down 96% from the $2.5 billion posted a year ago. Revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be range from $6.2 billion to $6.8 billion, officials said.
