WASHINGTON, DC-The Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the District of Columbia Housing Authority a $34.9 million grant, which will be used to replace aging housing with 1,562 new units. Specifically, the city will use the HOPE IV grant to replace 780 public housing units with 707 public housing units. The money will also fund the development of 525 affordable rental units and 330 market-rate homes. The site to be redeveloped sits next to the Navy Yard and Southeast Federal Center.

The Navy Yard site will ultimately include 600,000 sf of office space, and 20,000 sf to 40,000 sf of retail space. In a statement, the District says HUD selected the city from a pool of 66 applicants. And Washington has received other HOPE IV grants recently: $30.8 million last year, $29.9 million in 1999 and $20.3 million in 1997.
