Kitchell Mexico, a subsidiary of Phoenix-based Kitchell Contractors, handled the job for Thomson multimedia in Mexicali, Baja California. Mexicali, Baja's capital, is situated just south of the US-Mexico border in the "Maquila" area of the border, where non-Mexican companies have flocked to develop manufacturing and assembly plants.
Thomson will use the location to assemble large screen color television picture tubes. Thomson multimedia provides a wide range of technologies, systems, finished products and services to consumers and professionals of the entertainment and media industries.
Kitchell handled the on-site management and coordinated work performed by design-builder, ICA-Fluor Daniel. Kitchell Mexico also provided management support for the installation of production equipment, which included vendors, suppliers and contractors from the United States and several international locations.
Kitchell Mexico recently began the second phase of construction management within the same facility. The Mexican subsidiary started up several years ago and has since completed a number of projects for such companies as General Instruments, Molex Inc., Motorola and Hewlett-Packard.
