The existing 152 units will be upgraded and reconfigured into 125 studio, one-bedroom and one-bedroom-garden apartments, according to Bethel officials.

"The interior and exterior renovations have been exquisitely designed to provide a pleasant ambiance and quality setting for our residents," says Clare Shanley, the administrator for the Springvale Inn. "The plan calls for 125 studio and one-bedroom apartments including 24 garden units with patios and balconies. We expect these to be especially desirable since they afford the most active individuals greater independence. Our spacious apartment layouts offer kitchen and kitchenette alternatives. Residents may also choose from a variety of other options and amenities."

Jack Ritchie, vice president, housing and development of Bethel, adds, "We've recognized the need for a major improvement of the Inn and now, after careful planning and thanks to a comprehensive financing package, we are able to do it. Although this is, indeed, a major renovation, I want our residents to know that despite our new look, we are not going to lose the involved level of service and affordable pricing for which the Inn is known."

To finance the venture, Bethel secured U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) insurance for a $10.525 million Westchester County Industrial Development Agency bond. The financing was used to fund the renovation but also to refinance the debt on the facility, Ritchie notes.

The rents range from $2,234 per month for a studio (approximately 265 sf) to $3,721 per month for a one bedroom Garden unit of 580 sf. Services offered at The Springvale Inn include: three meals daily, weekly housekeeping, linen service, regular health and wellness assessments, scheduled transportation, utilities, concierge and staffing 24 hours a day.

The three story Inn also includes two dining rooms, lounge with a fireplace, library with computer station, game and activity rooms, indoor swimming pool, and on-site shops that include: a bank, post office, beauty/barber shop, physician and dentist, laundry facilities, dry cleaners and deli.

Construction on the renovations began recently and should be concluded by April 2002, Bethel officials note. Bethel, which is headquartered in Ossining, also operates the Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Croton-on-Hudson and the Bethel Nursing Home in Ossining.
