Veteran Volunteer Leading Downtown Austin Alliance

AUSTIN-Beverly Silas is the 2002 leader of the Downtown Austin Alliance, replacing outgoing chairman Robert Gaston of Equity Properties Trust. She says the coming year's goals will be gamed out at November's board meeting.

AUSTIN-The new chairwoman of the Downtown Austin Alliance sees downtown as a destination, but that it’s still on a journey to become a destination.

“There’s a perception that because there’s been a lot of activity in downtown Austin that it’s fixed,” Beverly Silas, new chairwoman, tells GlobeSt.com. “But it’s an ongoing journey. We’re not there yet. As Austin continues to grow and we continue to make downtown a destination it’s going to continue to evolve.”

Silas, who retired last year after a more-than 30-year career at Southwestern Bell, took the post this week from Robert Gaston of Equity Properties Trust. She says she’ll have more to say about specific goals for her term after November’s planning meeting with other board members.
