Calloway, Johnson, Moore & West is the architect and Davie Construction Co. has been awarded the construction contract. Both are locally based firms.

Work is scheduled to begin Nov. 5 and should be finished in May. It involves roughly 4,000 sf of new construction and 10,000 sf of renovations, Debbie Cesta, SciWorks' director of development and marketing, tells GlobeSt.com.

The impetus for the new work is "the board's desire to improve exhibits and programs and to complete the long-range plan that began with the 1992 renovation," Cesta says.

New construction includes two independent additions--one at the museum gift center; the other in the exhibit area, Kyle Condrey of Davie Construction tells GlobeSt.com.

SciWorks, which opened in 1964, features a 120-seat planetarium, 25,000 sf of exhibits and a 15-acre environmental park. It is located on county property and is supported by public and private grants. Funding for this project will come from individual, foundation and corporate donors and a special appropriation from HUD, Cesta says.
