Victorian House Making Way for Transit Hub

ST. PAUL, MN-The costly move will preserve a historic house and add a half-dozen condominium units to nearby Irvine Park. The entire project, including moving the structure and renovation, is expected to cost $3.4 million.

ST. PAUL, MN-The largest house in Downtown St. Paul will be moved this week in what is one of the largest and costliest preservation efforts in the city. The 115-year-old Armstrong-Quinlan House, a 10,000 sf brick double house across from Xcel Energy Center, will move five blocks to a new location on the west side of Chestnut Street across from the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Moving the 1.8-million-pound structure will take eight days and cost about $2.4 million.Vacant since 1988 and last used as a group care home, the house is being moved to make way for a new $20-million transit hub that will include a parking ramp, bus facilities and possibly some retail space. The house will be moved by Stubbs Building and House Movers of Orono, MN, in conjunction with International Chimney Corp. of Buffalo, NY, which also supervised the move of the Shubert Theater in Downtown Minneapolis in 1999.
