Some 88 projects were submitted for the annual Design Awards competition. The highest award, the Honor Award, was given to two different projects. The second highest award, the Merit Award, went to three more projects, while four Merit Awards were handed out along with three Citation Awards, one Craftsmanship Award and two People's Choice Awards.
The judges were: Dennis McFadden, design principal with Anshen + Allen in Los Angeles; Charles Rose, Charles Rose Architects in Somerville, Mass., and; Julie Snow, Julie Snow Architects in Minneapolis.
Honor Awards:
--Edward F. Stevens Center at George Fox University in Newberg, BOORA Architects, for innovative tilt-up structural system and sustainable components.
--The 2281 N.W. Glisan Building, Allied Works Architecture, for blending into the existing neighborhood.
--Tube, a restaurant at 18 N.W. Third Ave., Colab LLC, for diversity of construction materials, including fiberglass, stainless steel, walnut and naugahyde."
Merit Awards:
--Urban Center at Portland State University, Thomas Hacker and Associates, for "a responsible good citizen, providing a good background for the urban space and a foreground for the city.
-- Project for the Millennium at the Portland Art Museum, Ann Beha Associates and SERA Architects, for "Preserving the Belluschi legacy and integrating all the structures."
-- Steigerwald Gateway Center, Fletcher Farr Ayotte.

-- Portland Fire Station #41, 1500 S.E. 1222nd Ave., Emmons Architects.
--Center Townhomes, 5846 N.E. Center Commons Way, Otak Architects.
