The agreement between the city and Westbrook Torrey Hills L.P. will enable the early opening of the route, a four-lane road between the employment centers of Sorrento Mesa and Carmel Valley and a link toState Route 56.
``Planners had predicted that Vista Sorrento Parkway would not be opened until 2005 or later,'' says Irwin Jacobs, a member of the Coalition for Sorrento Traffic Relief and CEO of Qualcomm Inc. ``This agreement will open this north-south arterial by October of next year and dramatically improve the commutes of thousands of high-tech employees.''
Duane Roth, CEO of Alliance Pharmaceuticals and chair of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp's Quality of Life Committee, says the agreement "demonstrates the value of leadership and focus that Mayor Dick Murphy has brought to bear on the issue of regional traffic."
"The mayor and the rest of the strike force have been key allies to overstressed Sorrento Mesa commuters,'' he says.
The coalition is a group of businesses and trade associations focused on improving traffic circulation in Sorrento Mesa. The early opening of Vista Sorrento Parkway is one of six key priorities for the group.
The next task is a survey of Sorrento Mesa employers designed to see what can be done to reduce congestion during morning and afternoon rush hours.
