An effort by the Kraft family to plat the property they own at the southeast corner of Powerline Road and West Drive has been deferred twice by the Broward County Commission. Now the family may not even be eligible for a rehearing on the matter until sometime in the spring next year.
The Kraft family is proposing the development of 570,000 sf of industrial space and 68,000 sf of commercial space on a site that now contains 12,107 sf of nursery space and 24,400 sf of storage space, within a platted area covering about 39 acres.
The decision to defer the matter is being attributed in a large part to a recommendation to deny the plat application by the Development Management Division of the Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental. County staff declared the Kraft-family development proposal does not meet growth-management concurrency mandates for the regional road network in the county land-use codes.
The recommendation for denial is just one more challenge for a family-owned commercial nursery that Bert and Mildred Kraft founded in 1947. Sources familiar with the business tell GlobeSt.com the family started pursuing development options as the current drought-like conditions in South Florida posed a continuing hardship on the business.
There also appears to be an unfortunate case of irony surrounding this case. Sources tell GlobeSt.com the commercial nursery is dealing with the affects of a yearlong road construction project that may be hindering customer access to the business.
The outcome of this proposal now depends solely on the action of the County Commission, according to county records. Staff may rescind its recommendation to deny the plat application, if the commission approves a traffic concurrency agreement for improvements to Powerline Road and update a traffic status report for Southwest 10th Street, both of which take time finish.
