The $34 million project will house a variety of student service offices, the new Maguire Campus Ministry Center, dining and meeting facilities.

"The new student facility will realize our dream of a campus center that nurtures a sense of community. It will provide a central location for students to study, socialize and have access to services with a home-like atmosphere," says Seattle University President Fr. Stephen Sundborg"This is especially important for the 60 percent of undergraduates and 97 percent of graduate students who commute to campus."

The Project Architect is BJSS Duarte Bryant and the Contractor Baugh Construction Company. Lorig Associates LLC is the Project Manager.

A focal point in the new student center is a three-story ashler granite fireplace in the atrium entry. In addition, the center will house two new collegia - home like spaces with kitchen facilities and study areas - set aside for commuter students. Showers and lockers will also be available forstudents who commute via bicycle.

A skybridge will connect several residential buildings across East Cherry/ East James Way to theStudent Center and directly to campus. The main food facility for campus will be housed in the building.

"The Student Center will serve as the heart of campus, bringing together faculty, staff and students while linking campus with the community," says Joan Weiser, project manager withLorig Associates.

Leadership funding for the project, which includes the 14,000-square-foot renovation in an adjacent building, has enjoyed broad support from alumni and community leaders. Private donations to date exceed $17 million.

Seattle University also will apply for Green Building status for the center under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Certification program.
