HL-A Co. of suburban Bremen in Haralson County is one of five statewide suppliers that will be providing parts to Honda Manufacturing of Alabama. The value of the parts contract wasn't disclosed but HL-A is investing $30 million in expanding its 39-acre, two-year-old plant, 30 miles west of Downtown.
The supplier is adding 80,000 sf to one of the existing buildings and constructing a 35,000-sf paint shop building. HL-A anticipates adding 268 new jobs to its existing staff of 85 by 2004.
The expanded properties will house the production of outside door mirrors, door handles and lock assemblies, according to the company.
Honda is scheduled to begin full production Dec. 1 of its Odyssey Minivan line in a 1.4 million-sf manufacturing plant in Lincoln, AL. The plant is one of the largest in Alabama.
A total of 1,500 workers are projected to produce 120,000 vehicles and 120,000 engines per year.
The plant comprises high-pressure and low-pressure aluminum die casting, machining and assembly divisions; and test facilities, stamping, welding, painting and quality control departments, according to Industrial Information Resources Inc., a Houston-based industry researcher.
The property was designed and engineered by Giffels Associates Ltd., Toronto, and BE&K Inc., Birmingham, AL. Harbert, Hanscomb & Global of Birmingham was the general contractor.
Honda Manufacturing of Alabama is a division of Honda of America Motor Co. Inc., based in Marysville, OH.
Other Honda suppliers in Georgia are Neaton Auto Products and F&P America, both in Rome; Jefferson Industries in Rockmart; and Findlex Corp. in Walker County.
In a prepared statement, Gov Roy Barnes praised the Georgia Department of Industry for working with local companies to create new jobs. The five auto suppliers have invested a total $188 million and created 2,100 jobs, according to the Department of Industry.
