In the wake of the economic downtown, Detroit's finances are also spiraling out of control, and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer has proposed to sell about 900 acres of city-owned land in Northville and Plymouth townships.
The city says the land is worth $31.5 million, or $35,000 an acre, on the basis of a recent appraisal. Archer says the city must cut $60 million from the 2001-2002 budget.
"These are challenging times," Engler says. "This executive order takes the action necessary to provide for the growing number of low-income, seniors and disabled people in need of assistance. It also protects funding for public protection and shields higher education."
