A $12.6 Million Facelift for a 50-Year-Old Housing Complex

WASHINGTON, DC-The Huntwood Apartments, an affordable rental housing complex, will get a much-needed makeover with the assistance of government agencies and local developers. The half-century old complex will undergo $12.6 million in renovations, without displacing tenants during the process.

The Huntwood Preservation, L.L.C. has secured $3 million in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and $7.5 million in bonds from the DC Housing Finance Agency (DCHFA) to finance the project. There are 214 units among the apartment community’s 17 buildings, and William C. Smith Construction, Inc. will serve as the contractors on the job. Renovations include installing new kitchen and bath appliances, air conditioning units, and a playground. Upon completion, 80% of the apartments will be priced to accommodate tenants earning less than 60% of the area median income. “With Washington’s skyrocketing real estate market, it is important for us to preserve the city’s stock of affordable rental housing,” explains DCHFA Executive Director Milton J. Bailey.
