The Downtown San Diego Partnership awarded Centre City Development Corp. with the Alonzo Award for "A Clean Footprint," the environmental remediation plans of the seven-block footprint of the new San Diego Padres ballpark.

Environmental Business Solutions was the chief remediation consultant for the project. About 500 people attended the annual Alonzo Awards dinner Nov. 7 at the San Diego Convention Center.

The ballpark plan was one of nine projects, programs and individuals honored for contributing to the revitalization of downtown San Diego.

"This project involved a unique pooling of resources and an intense collaboration by all the consultants," says David Allsbrook, manager of contracting and acquisition for Centre City Development, the city's downtown redevelopment arm. "An otherwise complex remediation project was successfully completed with the utmost efficiency."

San Diego began implementing the plan in spring 1998 and was completed May 2000 as part of a $1 billion redevelopment effort to revitalize the East Village neighborhood. Construction on the ballpark has been delayed for a year due to financing concerns.

The City Council is set to consider a scaled-back financing plan on Tuesday.
