Major players at tomorrow's noon signing ceremony at the Sheraton New York Hotel will include Chao, Building and Construction Trades Council president Edward J. Malloy and Building Trades Employers Association president and CEO Louis Coletti.
The agreement has been drafted as a means of preventing occupational-related fatalities and serious injuries and illnesses among participants in the Ground Zero cleanup. It calls for the partners to exercise leadership in preventing accidents at the World Trade Center recovery site. The ceremony will be part of the Construction Industry Partnership's annual Safety Conference.
Also expected to witness the document are representatives from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the City of New York Fire Department, the NYC Division of Design and Construction, Bovis-Lend Lease, Turner Construction, Tully Construction, Plaza Construction and AMEC.
The Construction Industry Partnership represents both labor and management and is made up of 23 contractor associations, 1,500 construction managers and contractors and more than 200,000 members of the city building trades.
Coletti and Malloy have been central figures in the WTC cleanup since the Twin Towers were destroyed on Sept. 11. Within days of the bombings, they formed an ad-hoc coalition of construction-industry power players representing labor and management. The committee was charged with fast-tracking operations Downtown while drafting plans to ramp up the development of three million sf of office space throughout the city.
Working with the Real Estate Board of New York, the group compiled a map of potential development sites in order to deploy crews more efficiently. They also plan to accelerate apprenticeship classes to bring more labor online once the rebuilding process gets under way.
