Monthly cargo activity fell 19% from October 2000 and 7% for the year through October. The international portion also dropped, down 13%, compared to October 2000. For the year, international shipping is up 200%. In September, air cargo traffic dropped 42%.The drop-off comes as industrial construction in Austin's southeast submarket, where the airport is located, has picked up. Austin-based Angelou Economic Advisors has said that 42% of the industrial construction in 2001 is in the southeast submarket.
Cargo activity logged 27 million pounds in October in comparison to 33.7 million pounds inn October 2000 and 275 million pounds for the year through October compared 295.4 million pounds in the first 10 months of this year. International shipping totaled 1.2 million pounds in October and 18 million pounds for the year.
On the passenger side, October activity dropped 18% from October 2000. Nationally, passenger activity was down 23% in October. Year-to-year, Austin's passenger traffic is off 4%.
