New 540,000-SF Shopping Mall Planned for Milan Airport

MILAN-Barclays Capital and WestDeutsche Landesbank have submitted a planning application for a new 540,000-sf shopping centre close to Milan's airport at Linate.

MILAN- Barclays Capital and WestDeutsche Landesbank have lodged a planning application for a 540,000-sf shopping mall on a 50-acre site immediately north of Linate Airport, to the east of Milan city centre.

The design, by BDP, has been adapted to meet tight restrictions on development close to the airport. Land to a distance of 300 metres from Linate cannot be built on above ground level; and beyond this line building heights are restricted to less than 6m. BDP’s response to these constraints is an elliptical two-level shopping mall, where the lower level is sunk into a ‘crater’ and covered by a roof garden with terraces and fountains. The scheme will be linked into Linate airport’s departure level via a footbridge.
