Derry Factory Wins International Design Award

LONDON-A 250,000-sf computer factory in Northern Ireland has won an international award for innovation in construction techniques. Seagate Technology's plant in Derry, Northern Ireland, has won an award from the Design Build Institute of America.

LONDON-A 250,000-sf computer factory in Northern Ireland has won an international award for innovation in construction techniques. Seagate Technology’s recording head wafer fabrication plant in Derry City, Northern Ireland, designed by BDP, won a 2001 National Design–Build award presented by the Design–Build Institute of America. The award category was Best Industrial/Process Project Over $25 Million.

The 250,000 sq ft facility at Springtown Industrial Estate Derry was designed to manufacture 200 mm diameter wafers for Seagate’s range of hard disc drives. The highly specialised building needed a controlled environment and clean room and required access to large quantities of ultra clean water.
