Major projects, such as Ford Field, helped Detroit to again capture the region's No. 1 spot for nonresidential construction. Rounding out the top five by total square feet of floor space are:

* Detroit -- 6,368,500 sf

* Romulus -- 2,903,079 sf

* Warren -- 2,680,143 sf

* Troy -- 2,618,132 sf

* Dearborn -- 2,605,634 sf

In addition to recording projects, the report categorizes the amount of nonresidential construction by type. The top five categories in 2000 were:

* Industrial/research/hi-tech projects -- 17.1 million sf

* Retail -- 9 million sf

* Office -- 8.3 million sf

* Institutional -- 5.6 million

* Warehouse facilities -- 4.7 million
