Dole Fresh Fruit Co., the world's largest producer of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, signed a 20-year lease with the Port District last spring to operate the container facility, though terms weren't available. The port is demolishing two buildings to make way for the container operation, which is moving to San Diego from Los Angeles.

The food company plans to handle bananas imported from Ecuador, as well as other tropical products, at the new facility.

Officials say the facility could eventually double the $1.5 million in annual revenues it will bring to the port. The company plans to bring in about 45,000 containers per year. CATO Research Signs $661,000 Lease in Courtyard I in San Diego.
