City Energy Plant Proposal Elicits Protests

SAN FRANCSICO-A 540-megawatt energy plant is planned for the Bayview area, but energy groups and residents say that it's unfair to the low-income residents of the neighborhood, who have already suffered the brunt of heavy industries and pollution.

SAN FRANCISCO-The City of San Francisco’s plans to build a 540-megawatt, natural gas-fired plant in Potrero Hill’s Bayside area are being strongly criticized by conservation groups and angry residents.

Mirant Corp. would build the plant at 1201 Illinois St., between 22nd and 23rd streets, an already operating 206-megawatt steam turbine and 3 52-megawatt combustion turbines. Communities for a Better Environment argue the area is home to many people of color and extremely low incomes who have already suffered enough the brunt of heavy industries and pollution.
