The space agency released an environmental impact report last week that stated its plans to develop 213 acres for a research center and an additional 95 acres for housing. NASA plans to develop a total of three million-sf of office, retail and housing space between Highway 101 and the San Francisco Bay.
The space agency is currently considering five development options, with the 3 million-sf office, retail and housing plan at the top of its list. Other plans include leaving the space center as it is, or building a project on a much smaller scale.
Environmental groups have expressed fear that the proposed NASA center will pollute the area and create traffic and housing problems. NASA's public forums will attempt to address some of the issues that have arisen from concerned residents and community groups.
