Thirty Acres in Dinwiddie Permanently Preserved from Development

DINWIDDIE, VA-Developers, commercial or otherwise, will never get their hands on The White Oak Road Battlefield now that the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) has acquired 29.7 acres of an area where Confederate and Union soldiers battled on March 31, 1865. CWPT purchased the property, referred to by locals as the Robert’s tract, from an unnamed private owner for $70,000. The Dinwiddie County Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service join the trust in the procurement.

“White Oak Road is an important facet of the events leading up to the end of the war,” historian Chris Calkins explains at a news conference announcing the acquisition. “It is good to see that this property, containing the remaining Confederate earthworks along White Oak Road, is now saved in perpetuity.” CWPT bought another historically significant 30-acre parcel of land, just east of White Oak, twelve years ago.
