"Drawing upon our experience in designing laboratories and research facilities for some of the state's leading research-driven companies and universities, we have moved to a new level with Cal (IT)," says Scott Johnson, design partner of Johnson Fain Partners.

Plans for the proposed four-story facility call for wet and dry laboratories, offices, a lecture theater and meeting facilities. A gallery and space for experimental media may also be included. Upon completion, the building will encompass 120,000 sf.

The project, which is being sponsored by the state governor's office, will use an innovative design/build delivery method. Touted as a future source of support for the area's telecommunications and information technology companies, it will cost an estimated $33 million.
