The hospital has submitted certificate of need applications to bring new beds to expanded hospitals, Trester tells GlobeSt.com. He says he hopes to find out about the status of the applications in February.

The new plans include:

* Spending $10 million to help finance the $50-million joint hospital with Henry Ford Health System of Detroit. The new 150-bed hospital will be built in Trenton, MI and will combine two existing hospitals: Oakwood's Seaway Hospital and Riverside Hospital, owned by Henry Ford. The new hospital is tentatively named Riverside-Seaway Hospital, and should open by 2004.

* $20 million to move beds from the main, 650-bed Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in Dearborn to its Heritage Center facility in Taylor, MI.

* $58 million for new infrastructure at all Oakwood centers.

* $57 million for new surgical rooms at the hospital's Annapolis Center in Wayne and the main center in Dearborn.

* $54 million to renovate the Dearborn emergency room, build new Annapolis operating and emergency rooms, and purchase needed equipment Trester said the project reflects a move back toward traditional medicine theory.

"Several years ago, the focus became on building primary care centers," he says. "Now, around the country, hospitals are again moving to continue building specialty services, such as the surgical rooms, and facilities for cardiac and orthopedic services."

The expansion plan will be financed with $137 million internal cash, $50 million in credit, by selling another $10 million in assets and raising $3 million in donations, Trester says.
