Carl Johnson will quarterback for the usual one-year term. He is a principal at Johnson & Associates Commercial Real Estate Services Inc. in Scottsdale.

Johnson says some changes will be implemented in the coming year. The board is laying the groundwork to beef up its presence. "It's time we step up and become a bigger factor in the Greater Phoenix area," he tells GlobeSt.com.

The game book calls for setting up and helping to fund a commercial real estate course, most likely with a university real estate department, and scholarship program. The educational initiative for re-education and re-certification of commercial brokers will be fine-tuned at 2002 meetings, culminating with a decision in September 2002. The 75-member group also is plotting an honor for industrialist of the year. The SIOR chapter is in the initial stages of planning annual dinners to honor finalists. The first event won't be held until 2003.

In May 2002, the SIOR chapter will head to El Paso for a meeting. El Paso and Albuquerque brokers are part of the SIOR SW chapter, but distance often prevents members from attending the Phoenix meetings, Johnson explains. So, the group is going to its counterparts in Texas.

Meanwhile, March 7, 2002 will bring the second commercial real estate expo for Phoenix, sponsored by SIOR, IDRC and NACOR. SIOR will hold its first meeting of 2002 in conjunction with the expo.

In 1993, the new SIOR president founded Johnson & Associates, a member of CORFAC International. For nine years prior, he was a top producer at Daum Corp. Johnson, an SIOR member since 1992, started in commercial real estate after he retired from the New Orleans Saints in 1975.
