Winning the $10-million bid for the project are Northwest Architectural Co. of Seattle and Opsis Architecture of Portland.

The current two-story building will be transformed into a three-story, 47,000-sf structure. The project will include meeting rooms, offices, a bookstore, dining hall, Internet café and recreational facilities.

"All the teams we interviewed had good presentations and qualifications. However, NAC/Opsis offered the presence of a local firm combined with significant student union experience," Ivan Gorne, vice president of student services, said in a news release.

Construction is slated to begin in spring 2003 and end in fall 2004.
