Cushman was installed yesterday during a swearing-in ceremony at the San Diego Convention Center. He said the committees, drawn from throughout the region, will have access to the port staff and commissioners.
On the seven-member Port Commission, Cushman represents the city of San Diego. He succeeds Frank Urtasun as the commission's chairman, a post that rotates annually among commission members. The commission has three representatives from San Diego and one each from Coronado, National City, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach.
Also yesterday, Retired vice Adm. Robert J. " Rocky " Spane was sworn in as the new commissioner representing Coronado. He succeeds retired Rear Adm. Paul Speer.
The commission governs the San Diego Unified Port District, which oversees public tidelands along San Diego Bay and serves as landlord to more than 600 tenants. The port also operates Lindbergh Field, two shipping terminals and a cruise-ship terminal.
